Modern life has its demands. Whether you are tired, stressed or still a bit asleep, a good shower is the perfect way to relax, re-energize or wake you up at the start of your day.  In this regard, hydrotherapy is the perfect experience, provided you have the right equipment. DTV Prompt by Kohler is just the answer.

Intuitive, simple-to-use, versatile, customizable and easy-to-install, DTV Prompt offers multiple bathing and showering solutions to meet an array of expectations.

Smart

The interface presents an elegant, restrained design and 4 features:

  • Warm-up mode feature. Once the desired temperature is reached, the water pauses until you are ready to step into the shower.
  • Countdown mode feature sets the duration of the shower to manage water use and time (4 to 12 minutes).
  • Pause feature lets you pause water flow for up to two minutes (wash your hair), Temperature control limits the maximum temperature for guaranteed safe, family use, thanks to the thermostatic valve.

User-friendly

Easy-to-read, large, intuitive LCD display and buttons: On/pause/off, diverter and temperature control (red or blue arrows).

Versatile

DTV Prompt’s integrated diverter lets you toggle between water outlets, or run them both simultaneously, thus offering multiple configurations.

For example, you can use together showerhead and bath filler, showerhead and handshower, handshower and side body sprays, handshower and bath filler or showerhead and bath sprays. Other combinations are possible…as you like them.

Customizable

The system allows the user maximum customization with different parameter settings.

Time can be set to a 12- or 24-hour clock. Temperatures can be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit.  If desired, the Preheating mode can start up when you push the “On” button. You choose the number of water outlets (A or B) and the diverter can be configured onto outlets A or B, or A + B.

The system delivers up to 50 l/min at 3 bars (30 l/min for a single outlet) for a quick bath fill or a multiple spray shower.

Easy to install

Last of all, DTV Prompt is easy to install: the interface connects to the thermostatic valve by a standard phone cord (comes with a 6-meter cable) and mounts to the wall surface. An integrated 12V transformer connects to the power supply.

  • Italy’s biggest tile expo reminds us that design is in the details

Liza Watermeyer, Retail Display Manager of Tile Africa, lets us in on the design and renovation trends showcased at the exclusive International Cersaie Exhibition

Every year, Tile Africa sends a team of experts to Cersaie, the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings, which takes place in Bologna, Italy. It’s the perfect aesthetic setting after all, one of the first tiled floors, designed by a celebrated artist, was placed in the chapel of San Petronio in Bologna in 1487.

Cersaie offers industry leaders an insider preview of what to look forward to when it comes to new trends in tiles, bathroom and interior design. “For us, it ensures we’re always on top of those trends,” says Liza Watermeyer, Retail Display Manager of Tile Africa, who attended the exhibition. “Most exhibitors had beautiful lifestyle settings, transporting you into a space that would inspire anyone to start renovating,” says Liza.

Now back home in South Africa, Liza shares what’s in store when it comes to tiling and bathroom design.

    It’s in the details!

When it comes to beautiful design, it’s all about the details. Well thought out, considered details are being used across décor and design, to truly transform the sensory experience. “Finer details appeal to the customer, because they allow you to create an individual, bespoke look in your home or workplace,” says Liza.

    In the bathroom…

Bathrooms will be beautifully designed with practicality in mind. Look out for baths and basins made from materials that are resistant to stains, retain heat, have sustainable qualities and can be custom built. “We saw a lot of adaptable bathroom furniture that can fit together, the perfect solution for smaller bathrooms.” says Liza. “Mix a vanity with a shelf, for example. Whatever works for your space and lifestyle!”

When it comes to tiles, bathrooms are getting a lot of attention, with interesting combinations of field tiles (larger, usually floor tiles) being mixed with smaller tiles. If you’re looking for something a little more special, create patterns; the future of tiles will be all about texture. Go for a mosaic or branch out with 3D tiles, prints, patterns or metallic foil details. As for the colour? Go darker than neutral; brown and black featured across all styles.

In the kitchen… and living room

When it comes to design, we’re still seeing a lot of blurred lines between the living room and the kitchen. We love to eat, work, cook and live in the same space, and fittings and furnishings need to be agile to cater for different uses. Mixing looks and sizes provides interest when integrating these spaces.

Tiling your kitchen? Glazed ceramics like metro and brick-shaped tiles in interesting materials like glass, cement, wood and stone are perfect for your walls. This allows you to play with your kitchen aesthetics, whether it’s futuristic, vintage industrial or naturally beautiful.

Large format, rectangle porcelain tiles, in the 1200 x 600mm size, are the ultimate in trend forward floor applications. Others sizes to keep in mind are 600 x 600mm and 800 x 800mm. These formats are available in matt, gloss and lapatto surfaces. The looks include, marble, cement and stone. Soft wood look planks, mixed with these looks and forming part of the tilling layout, are also a key trend for the floor. Mixing looks and sizes provides interest and solutions when integrating these spaces.

    In your outdoor area…

The big trend to look for when renovating your outdoor area is anything linked to nature. Natural stone, stone-look tiles and wood-look tiles would all work outdoors – and are very popular at the moment. But, again, we’re looking to practicality too. Porcelain products can withstand extreme weather conditions and slip-resistant tiles, in stone and cement, are a must – especially around a pool. “Mix stone and cement for an eclectic style, or use the cement look on its own, to create a no-fuss Modern Metro Style,” says Liza.

It’s clear that trends are moving in the direction of sustainable, agile spaces. We’re celebrating unique living spaces that work with our lifestyles. Keep your renovations bespoke, practical and environmentally sound. “Craftsmanship is valued, as is a need to conserve the resources we have left. These must be considered hand-in-hand with our style choices,” says Liza.

The greatest takeaway from Cersaie is to be bold, and not be afraid to experiment with colour, material and more. Eclectic beats uniform, and as long as you focus on the details, you can proudly make your own unique mark on your spaces.

  • Waterproof a shower

Failed or poor waterproofing is often to blame for tiling failures, leaks and costly repairs. Bear in mind that tiling itself is not inherently waterproof, and therefore it is essential to have properly detailed and installed waterproofing behind tiled surfaces.

TAL shares practical advice on how to waterproof a shower with TAL’s Sureproof flexible and seamless rapid-setting two-component waterproofing system.

GOOD TO KNOW: Allow plenty of time to complete this project, as the waterproofing system requires about 24 hours to dry before tiling can commence.

    Preparation

Start the process by priming the surface and ensure it is in good condition, clean and dry, and has a moisture content of less than 5%. If necessary, the shower surface can be shot-blasted to give the tile adhesive extra grip, before being sealed with a layer of TAL Floor Primer. If the existing surface is dense and smooth, apply a slurry comprising TAL Floorkey and TAL Rapidfix.

    1. It is important to allow for any movement. Apply a 10mm bead of sanitary silicone to all internal corners and joints around the floor waste, taps and rose plumbing.

    2. Combine the two ingredients of TAL Sureproof together. Use a mechanical mixer or attach a mixer to your drill.  Add the powder to the liquid and mix until a creamy, lump-free consistency is obtained. Allow the mix to stand for three minutes and then stir again.

    3. Apply the first coat of TAL Sureproof to the wall and floor corners. Immediately bed the TAL Sureproof Membrane (200mm wide) into the wet Sureproof [see below]. The Sureproof Membrane must be pushed into the corners, ensuring the entire interface is covered with the membrane. Ensure there are no wrinkles or air bubbles trapped beneath the membrane.

    4. Apply a second coat of TAL Sureproof to saturate the membrane completely before the first coat dries.

    5. Where the waste is flush with the floor, place the membrane around and down into the waste.

    6. For the main shower wall and floor surfaces, apply the first coat of TAL Sureproof to the dry, primed surface with a short hair paint roller or brush, and allow approximately two hours to dry. Apply the second coat in a different direction to ensure complete coverage, avoiding air entrapment or pinholes. Allow the TAL Sureproof system to dry for 24 to 36 hours before fixing the tiles.

When tiling, modify the tile adhesive and grout with TAL Bond Powder or Bond Liquid to add flexibility and water resistance to the tiling installation, and apply a silicone sealer to all the perimeter joints.

GOOD TO KNOW: Use of the shower is not recommended for 72 hours after completion of the tiling to ensure that the installation has cured fully.

As a final touch, seal the grout joints with TAL Grout Sealer. This will ensure your newly-installed shower not only looks good, but is also easy to clean. If in any doubt visit www.tal.co.za

  • Virgin Active Shower Walls

Virgin Active Constantia renovates their shower cubicles utilizing Perspex for a durable, executive appeal

As Virgin Active is one of the most popular fitness establishments in South Africa, their changing facilities are utilized consistently by a considerable number of members. The shower cubicles therefore take quite a bit of strain on a daily basis, which unavoidably can lead to a significant amount of damage. To ensure that the cubicles always look good and to reduce the negative impact of the general wear and tear the materials used to build these facilities need to be of a high quality, long lasting and extremely durable.

Virgin Active in Constantia have experienced an excessive amount of breakages to their glass shower cubicles, in the male and female change rooms. They contacted Cubicle Solutions in May 2015 to look for an alternative solution that would reduce the damage and constant repair costs. Cubicle Solutions suggested a tailor-made, shower cubicle system that would be specifically adapted to flow with the existing showers and avoid having to re-fit the tiles. The cubicles were built using 12mm Perspex® Cast Acrylic for extra strength to provide the rigidity needed for reduced damage. Perspex® Cast Acrylic is a consistent, high quality and durable acrylic sheeting, making it the perfect material for a well-used facility and is used to bring life to the creative ideas of architects, specifiers, interior designers, furniture designers, brand architects, graphic designers, automotive designers and fabricators world-wide. They specifically selected the frosted white sheeting to ensure that the cubicles remained private and to provide an executive appeal to the overall look and feel of the change room.

Cubicle solutions, together with Perspex completed the outstanding installation on deadline and Virgin Active Constantia was extremely happy with the overall solution and facelift to their change rooms.
